JIM GOGGIN, PETER CLUTE - The great jazz revival. A Pictorial Celebration of Traditional Jazz

Title: The great jazz revival. A Pictorial Celebration of Traditional Jazz
Description: Donna Ewald, 1994. Paperback. Pp: 159. THE GREAT JAZZ REVIVAL tells the lively story of the revival of traditional jazz in the San Francisco Bay area. San Francisco Chronicle columnist Herb Caen states on the back cover: "One of the unaccountable gaps in the gaudy history of San Francisco - the long story of trad jazz & its practitioners - has at last been filled! This long-overdue account steps to the lively beat of a young & pleasure-loving city & will make all San Franciscophiles even sorrier they were not on hand snapping their fingers, kicking up their heels, far into the endless nights." In his introduction Phil Elwood writes of "The powerful, compelling, eclectic music which got its act together in various ad hoc groups during the 1930s." The most famous of the groups associated with the revival was Lu Watter's Yerba Buena Jazz Band. Since the Watter's band played a considerable number of tunes associated with Jelly Roll Morton, King Oliver, Louis Armstrong & other New Orleans musicians, its style was loosely defined as "New Orleans Jazz." Later, The Yerba Buena Band's trombonist Turk Murphy would come to use the term "Traditional Jazz." THE GREAT JAZZ REVIVAL traces the musicians who almost singlehandedly brought this wonderful music back to life. People like Wally Rose, Bob Helm, Bob Scobey, Clancy Hayes, Paul Lingle & more. The book tells of their early influences & their "rediscovery" of musicians such as Bunk Johnson, Kid Ory & Mutt Carey. Readers will enjoy the many rare photographs & pieces of memorabilia throughout the book. The final chapter showcases musicians who are still playing this immensely popular music throughout the world. ISBN: 9780964106703. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
