ALBERT CHAMBON - Quand la France était occupée, 1940-1945

Title: Quand la France était occupée, 1940-1945
Description: Editions France-Empire, 1987. Paperback. Pp: 206. Analyzes the dimensions of French resistance and collaboration. States that resistance was more widespread than is commonly acknowledged, most of the French being, if not anti-Nazi, certainly anti-German. Argues that the Vichy administration was not altogether bad since it spared France even worse suffering. In ch. 3 (pp. 39-50), claims that the existence of the Free Zone diminished the number of Jewish deportees and that, although odious, Laval's agreement to deport immigrant Jews allowed most French Jews to be saved. Moreover, nobody knew what was happening in the concentration camps and many refused to believe the vague rumors about extermination. Criticizes the fact that the term "deportation" is connected only with Jews. Contends that there were even more resistance fighters and political deportees. Denounces recent attempts to deny the Holocaust and recalls details of the extermination camps. Cond./Kwaliteit: Goed.
