SALVATORE S. NIGRO - Pontormo. Drawings

Title: Pontormo. Drawings
Description: Harry N. Abrams, 1992. Linnen band met stofomslag. Pp: 158. Jacopo Carrucci, called Pontormo (1494-1557), was the most influential proponent of Florentine Mannerism - a distinctive style that dominated the seventy-five-year span between the High Rennaissance and the Early Baroque. As a youth, Pontormo worked as an assistent to the Renaissance painter Andrea del Sarto, wo at first influenced him greatly. In later years, however, Pantormo's style was much affected by that of Michelangelo and the Mannerists. n'Pontormo Drawings' is the first large-format, full-color treatment of the drawings of this artist. These works are particularly important to scholars and connoisseurs of sixteenth-century Itlian art because most of Pontormo's paintings and frescoes no longer exist. The portrait studies shown here - with their elongated figures, contorted postures, agitated lines, and more psychological than representational character - clearly reflect the artist's independent search for new ways of expression.
