Description: Zacharias Romberg, 1748. half roan. Folio. The second of four plate volumes, containing a total of 248 full-page hand-finished mezzotint engravings (plates 276-525), as well as four loose additional plates (792, 794, 795 & 821) from one of the other volumes. Of the plates 9 are folding. The colouring was done using Teyler`s process (patented 1688): they are engraved in combination with mezzotint colouring and then finished by hand. The plates are engraved by B. Seuter, J.E. Ridinger & J.J. Haid, after designs by Georg Dionysius Ehret.The title given above, incidentally, is taken from Landwehr`s bibliography "Studies in Dutch Books with Coloured Plates Published 1662-1875", as the title page present in the book states: "Taalryk Register der Plaat- ofte Figuur-beschryvingen der Bloemdragende Gewassen [etc.]". The complete edition consists of 8 volumes (4 text & 4 plate), and was published in Regensburg (1735-1745), under the title Phytanthoza Iconographia. The current edition is the first Dutch translation of that epic work, reputedly with better plates, as a higher quality paper was used.It is said that the introduction of a copy of this Dutch translation into Japan radically changed the illustrated botanical literature, and led to the production of the 96-volume illustrated herbal Honzo Zufu by Iwasaki Kanen.*Landwehr col.pl. 212 / *Pritzel 10140 / Blunt & Stearn pp. 154-156.
