Original and quite scarce text by Necker, a treatise on political science studying the separation and distribution of power and aiming at a comparison of the executive power in various modern states. Necker was minister of finance under Louis XVI, whose dismissal in part led to the storming of the Bastille. His inability to deal with France's finances after the Revolution led to his retirement in 1790. Necker was a big supporter of the American Revolutionary War, and the father of Madame de Staël.
