Description: Malines ( Mechelen - Mechlin ), J.F. Gilis imprimeur, 1836, in-12°, 17 x 10,3 cm, 40 pp , sewn, orig. printed wrapper. Tiny spine damaged and nearly completely missing, two small label tipped on to the front wrapper, still a fine/good copy. This small booklet has all the credentials to be called the first railway travel guide. According a decree of the young Belgian state (1st May 1834) Mechelen was to become the first town on the European continent to built a railway for freight and passengers with steamtraction. The first line on the continent was inaugurated, in the presence of Georges Stephenson, on 5th May 1835 and led from Mechelen to Brussels. In his preface the travel guide author wrote '' Malines étant le point central de l'Etablissement des Chemins de Fer ...(est)... ainsi destinée à être visitée par un grand nombre de personnes...( ce livre) procure aux étrangers le moyen de profiter agréablement du séjour qu'ils font dans cette petite ville....[Translation] Mechelen, being the central point in the newly developping railroad system will receive large numbers of visitors...This booklet offers them the information to make the most of the visit. Indeed the guide offers them all practical information you would expect from a modern guide with an exhaustive list of all hotels, cafes, restaurants etc. On the cover title is proudly annouced that the guide can be bought in '' several railway stations''. At the year of publication ( 1836) there were only two stations operating on the whole European continent : Mechelen and Brussels !. .
