Title: A Vision Shared: A Classic Portrait of America and Its People 1935-1943.
Description: New York, St. Martin's Press, 1976. 1st edition. Hardcover, dj, 309 pp. profusely illustrated, BW-photos by the photographers working for the Farm Security Administration (FSA - New Deal), under John Stryker (1893-1975). The accompanying texts consist of biographical essays on the individual photographers, with comments and captions in their own words. Note LT: A compelling testimonial of the Great Depression in the 30's. It was this poverty that was described by John Steinbeck in the Grapes of Wrath. The photos do exactly what they were meant for: to show and document what an economic crisis does to man, woman and child, the loss of dignity and hope. Later on this evidence became Art, but it is useful to remember that in those days the documentary force of the images prevailed. As if the sublimation of it all puts the memory at ease and political responsabilities less punitive. Bio: Collier (1913-1992), Delano (1914-1997), Evans (1903-1975), Jung (1906-1996), Lange (1895-1965), Lee (1903-1986), Mydans (1907-2004), Rothstein (1915-1985), Shahn (1898-1969). Very good
